What's the difference between .jpg and .jpeg?

If you've been around photos on your computer, cellphone and camera, you've probably notice there's a lot of picture formats out there
What's the difference between .jpg and .jpeg?

There are many picture formats out there, but all have unique file formats. But .jpg and .jpeg seems to be very similar, why is that?

The reason is really simple, because they're the exact same format

.jpeg was created in 1992 by Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) and originally the only extension to be used was .jpeg

But because Windows at the time only allowed file extension of three characters, .jpg extension was created

So now you've two file extensions (.jpg and .jpeg), for the same format and it doesn't matter which of these two variants you use
