YouTube's Dislike-button got nerfed

YouTube's Dislike-button got nerfed

You might have already seen it, there's no longer visible how many disliked a video

If you have been on YouTube in the past few days, you might have noticed that you no longer can see how many people disliked a video

We're making the dislike counts private across YouTube, but the dislike button is not going away. This change will start gradually rolling out today

The dislike button is still there, just how many disliked it is gone from public view. Creators can still see how many disliked a video

Why hide dislike?

YouTube have been doing research the past year on the effect of the dislike button and have found that among the participants, they were less likely to press dislike when the value was hidden

We want to create an inclusive and respectful environment where creators have the opportunity to succeed and feel safe to express themselves

They also mentioned many new creators can be hit hard with dislikes and review bombing

Drawback of this move

A common use of the dislike to like ratio for many, especially on smaller creators videos on niche areas. Is that it's a good indication if the video is any good, not scam and safe

I know personally I often use the the ratio, when looking for good guides and instructions on a specific topic. Without having to watch through entire videos to find out if it's any good

Business aspect

One can also not forget that YouTube is a business, that try to make money and wants to be in good standing with the big companies, to continue to make money

It's not to hide under a rock that many big companies have often faced lot of dislikes, with announcements not popular with the audience

It will only be speculations if this had any impact on the decision to remove the dislike button count
