Resident Evil (show): Review

Netflix's take on Resident Evil is out with it's first season, spanning eight episodes about 1 hour each

It takes inspiration of event's from the video game series, but put itself in the future and with new characters. Allowing it some freedom on how write the story, while still keeping the original video games story as a back story

New Racoon City

It's been 24 year's since the Racoon City incident, the incident was covered up as a gas leak and Umbrella have established New Racoon City in South Africa

Billy, Jade and Albert Wesker have just moved to here. Albert is working at the Umbrella facility, that work on releasing a new drug called Joy. That will make people happy and is built from the T-Virus

Meanwhile Billy and Jade is attending the local school. Billi had a fight with one of the other students and Albert invited her to come visit his work, instead of going to school. At the Umbrella site, she saw a cart full of rabbits being transported into the elevator. Later at night she discuss with Jade to break into Umbrella and set the rabbits free

They record their father's voice and use his voice, to access the facility. Once into the lab, Billi starts recording all the animals in cages. Meanwhile Jade is going through the files on the computer. She finds a video labeled Tijuana, which depict a slaughter. While Jade is watching, Billi sees a big cage in the back. It's to dark to take photo, so she opens the cage and out jumps a big dog, which is very aggressive

The girls run away, but the dog eventually catches up to the girls and bites Billi. Jade starts investigating Tijuana, to figure out what really happened and how this ties in to Billi' bite

2036

Then the show jumps to 2036, where we meet Jade in what looks like a deserted city. Putting out a rabbit as lure and watching zombies chasing the rabit, to see if there's any development in brain functionality. She scratch herself by accident, so she start's bleeding and the zombies start chasing her. She run's back to her base and triggers the safety system, that put's the entire area on flames and kills the zombies

All the commotion wakes up a giant zombified caterpillar sleeping underneath and it starts attacking her. She falls down and get knocked out. Meanwhile some armed men finds her, kill the caterpillar and bring her to their base

When she wakes up, she finds out they've informed Umbrella about her and that they're on their way. When Umbrella arrives, they kill everyone at the outpost and start's chasing Jade. She barely escapes the outpost and works on a way back to her base, where her daughter is

Through the eight episodes, you'll slowly uncover what happened at New Racoon City and the Wesker family. At the same time, what's going on in the present

Verdict

Resident Evil will keep you engaged from start to finish. You'll follow the Wesker sisters, but mostly Jade. On her adventures through the New Racoon City incident and present day, set to 2036

The show show homage to previous events in the franchise, through it's eight episodes. Such as the Racoon City incident, Lisa Trevor and more if you keep your eyes and ears open

You don't need to be a fan to enjoy the show, but you won't be getting all references if you're not
