Shadow and Bone: Review
Netflix's new fantasy series out, causing me to stay up five hours past my normal bedtime bing watching
It's based on the two book series Grisha and Six of Crows
It adapts the first book in the Grisha trilogy, Shadow and Bones. It also acts as an prequel to the Six of Crows duology
You follow Alina, a half Shu, that was made orphan because of the fold. As an assistant cartographer of the Royal Corps of Surveyors in the First Army. Where she serves with her best friend Mel, an tracker in the First Army. Which she have know since they lived together in the orphanage
The Fold
The fold was created by the darkling hundred of years before we meet Alina and it splits Ravka into two
It stretches north into Fjerdan, neighboring country who want all Greisha dead and south into the guarded mountain range
Traversing the fold
As you've to choose between danger, no matter how you choose to get to the other side of Ravka. Many choose the dangerous journey through the fold
Inside the fold, you've dangerous creatures called Volcra living. These flying creatures are attracted to light and noise. Considering it's dark inside the fold, you don't want to become prey to the Volcra, by lighting a lanterns. At the same time, you might also want slight light to see exactly where you're going
While Alina her the army is traversing the fold, they get attached by the Volcra and struggling to survive. They get killed of one by one by the Volcra. Mel get's injured and Alina manage to chase of the Vulcra attacking him. When she get's over to check on him a volcra comes out of the dark and grab her, as it flyes away
Suddenly a power light can be seen and the Volcra starts dying
The Sun Summoner
It turns out Alina is the fabled Sun Summoner they've waited for generations to appear, so that the fold can be destroyed
General Kirigan checked Alina and confirms she's a Gisha
Gisha are people with magical powers, such as creating wind or fire. They're powerful people, but not general liked by the average person. The Second Army, are for Geisha and they've base in the little castle. Close by the castle of the king of Ravka
The Gisha is lead by General Kirigan, a descendant of the Darkling who created the fold so many years ago
Alina is reluctant to go with them to the little castle, but want to stay with Mel and her comrades. They fear people will try to assassinate her, when people find out she's the Sun Summoner and they brings her to the little castle
Kaz, Inej and Jesper
Meanwhile the rumor is spreading about the Sun Summoner and 1 million reward is given for those who can bring her. As it's a lucrative market for those who can provide safe passage and travel goods between the regions
Kaz, Inej and Jesper sets out to capture the Sun Summoner for the reward money. First they need to find the so called conductor, so they can have a change of traversing the fold
Conclusion
If you're a fan of fantasy, as I am. This is a great series and I highly recommend to check it out
I started watching same day as it was released and ended up with "I'll just watch one more"-loop. At 5hr past my normal bedtime. I threw in the towel, with just a couple of episodes left. Which was quickly watched after some rest
I've just covered the beginning of season 1 in this review and there's more surprises waiting
