Why is #TeamSeas on so many YouTube videos?

If you've been on YouTube, watch TV or read the news in the last few days, you might have seen #TeamSeas mentioned and might be wondering what it is

In 2019, #teamtrees [↗] was launched by Mark Rober [↗] and MrBeast [↗]. Both most famous for their respective YouTube channels

The goal was to plant 20 million trees by the end of 2020, but they manage to collect enough to plant more than 23,166,880 million trees. For every 1 USD, one tree will be planted

#TeamSeas

Now they are back and this time the focus is on the seas, more precisely all the waste in the sea. Goal this time is to remove 30 million pounds of trash by January 1st, 2022. For every 1 USD donated, 1 pound of trash will be removed from the seas

Every single dollar #TeamSeas raises toward the $30M will go to independently verified pounds of trash that have been removed from beaches, rivers or the ocean. When you donate, the funds go directly to the two not-for-profit organizations, Ocean Conservancy and The Ocean Cleanup. They split the funds 50/50 and the money will be released when the trash is removed and verified: $1, one pound. Each non-profit is responsible for delivering on their half of the goal

As of writing, #TeamSeas are up to 11,807,232 pounds removed and growing

Will this solve the trash problem?

No, it will not. Even if they reach their goal, there will still be a lot of trash in the ocean. That's why it's important with continued focus on reducing waste and ensuring proper disposal of trash

The Interceptor

It's not enough to clean up once, but we also need to find solution to stop trash getting into the ocean in the first place

The Ocean Cleanup have created the Interceptor. Which is an solar powered boat you place on the water, that has a conveyor belt going into the ocean to collect trash

The Interceptor is connected to a barrier, that floats on the water and guide the trash to the conveyor belt. It only float on the water, so fish is still able to swim underneath

Then the trash goes into containers on the Interceptor, that can be collected when full and brought to wast management facilities

Mark Rober

The Ocean Cleanup's goal is to place 1000 Interceptors, in the 1000 rivers who pooute the most within 5 years

The Interceptors are not meant as a permanent solution, but a temporary solution to prevent trash going into the ocean

How can you help?

There's more ways to help. One way is to put on clothes and go to a beach to collect trash. Another is to reduce waste, so less waste will go into the nature. You can also dontate to #TeamSeas on their website https://teamseas.org [↗]

I've already donated to this cause, as I find it to be a good cause
