Shakey's Philippines: If it's late, it's free!
Before moving to the Philippines, I'd only seen delivery guarantee on pizza in American movies. I wasn't sure if they actually gave the pizza for free if it was late in America or if it was only something they did in the movie
I didn't doubt maybe one place in entire America had a guarantee like that, but at the same time want sure if it was common or more just something that only happened in the movie
To my big surprise, when I saw Shakey's Pizza in the Philippines advertising If it's late, it's free!
As I rarely ordered food when I first got here and dine-in didn't have any delivery guarantee. I didn't think much more about it
A few years later and I'd gotten kids. Delivery became more normal once in a while and Shakey's managed to become one of the places we keep returning to. As they've decent food, acceptable prices and they're not too sweet (some pizza chains in this country, makes their pizza taste super sweet)
It was late
Then it suddenly happened, they were late. I asked them if it's true it's free if it's late? Hesitantly they answered yes and after a call with their manager, as I've already paid online. They offered to give me addition food for free, instead of a refund. I accepted and a little while later they came and delivered the extra foodSince then it have happened multiple times that they're late. Considering how often we've ordered, it's still just a small percentage. Most drivers (what we call the ones delivering) are a bit hesitant when you tell them it's late, but accept it. One time I had a driver who started begging that it wasn't late. As I didn't feel like arguing, I did end up paying the driver, even if it was late. Which takes us over to my biggest concern with this guarantee
Who covers the guarantee?
When I lived in Norway, I would without a doubt know the store would cover the cost of late deliveryIn the Philippines, I'm not so sure. I know many places in this country, they push the bill to their workers. Cashiers as an example, if there's missing money at the end of their shift (you gave wrong change or wrong punched, so there's a difference), you'll need to cover this difference from your own pocket. I also know some restaurants will have the workers pay if something was wrong with the order (they punched hotdog, instead of pasta), if you send it back to get what the order should have been
Which makes a guarantee like this bitter sweat. If it's the store covering the expenses, then I don't have a to big problem with it, but if it's the worker, it can have a huge impact on them
I've reached out to Shakey's Philippines to get a comment on who cover the bill, if it's late
I wasn't to happy with the first answer they gave, as they only mentioned it's charged to the store and after getting them to clarify. They finally said in black and white their drivers are not charger for late delivery
