Transferring save data from a broken Nintendo Switch #Teardown
My Nintendo Switch V1 broke down, it just straight up refused to charge and because of the world situation at the time, going to a repair shop wasn't much of an option
There could be more wrong with it, so decision landed on buying the Nintendo Switch V2 (red box model). Bear in mind this was back in late 2020, before the OLED model was released
Depending on where you live, taking apart the Switch can void your warranty. Even if it doesn't void your warranty, you can still cause damage not covered by warranty
After taking apart the Nintendo Switch V1, it wasn't hard to see why the charging stopped working. Lots of corrosion on the USB-C connector
When comparing the V2 (left) and V1 (right) side by side, there's no clear difference. The battery size is the same and the other changes that can be seen, can just be that the part is produced at a different manufacturer
The main difference, is an upgraded processor. Nvidia discontinued the 20nm Tegra chip used in Nintendo Switch V1, so Nintendo made a revision using the new 16nm Tegra chip. Making the new revision more power efficient and therefor almost last twice as long, on the same battery size as the first revision. There's also a minor improvement to the screen panel, so the screen is slight brighter than the first revision
As I wanted to save the savedata on the old Nintendo Switch, I connected the battery to the new Nintendo Switch and let it charge
When it had charged for a while, I tried to transfer the data to the new Nintendo Switch and of course Nintendo had implemented an requirement that the charger have to be connected at all times, during the transfer
I ended up getting a Nintendo Switch Online membership, so I could cloud backup my save data and just download it on the new Nintendo Switch
