As the name implies, it will change the device and most apps darker. By default, most devices and apps has historically been bright and often white colored. Dark mode will change to a dark color theme, but not necessary black. Often the dark theme is a combination of gray colors or even dark colorsNot all apps support dark mode, but more and more apps does. Most apps will follow the default color profile of your device, so if you change to dark mode the apps will normally follow suite. Most apps also allows you to set apps individual, so you can set some apps to always be bright and some to always be dark
